10 reasons why you don’t need a DAM
To many companies, Digital Asset Management (DAM) sounds like the ultimate solution to all their (content) problems. But the time isn’t always right for a DAM. Here are ten reasons why you’d be better off not implementing a DAM system just yet – or at least why you should reassess your expectations.
1. You expect an immediate return on investment
A DAM does not deliver a ‘quick win’. You will only see a return on investment once you have invested time and resources in processes, metadata and training. Use the implementation as an opportunity to improve your processes and workflows – then the system will pay for itself step by step.
2. You believe that you’ll never lose a file again
No system in the world can replace clear guidelines. If files are not uploaded or are deleted by mistake, they are lost. With DAM, search processes become faster – but discipline and clear processes remain crucial.
3. You want to automate SEO
DAM systems are not SEO tools. However, they do allow you to manage keywords, alt text and image captions centrally within the metadata to support established SEO guidelines and ensure consistent wording.
4. You never want to end up with the wrong versions again
Even with a perfectly implemented DAM, an employee could still send the old file from drive L. Only training, clear rules and a DAM with a simple sharing function can minimise this risk. The system supports you by making current assets more easily accessible and archiving old versions.
5. You think metadata fills itself in
Without careful tagging, searching remains a laborious and error-prone process. I can only search for what I know. Develop guidelines and processes for the collection, maintenance and cleansing of metadata, and ensure quality assurance. Only then will your DAM become a reliable source.
6. You rely on licence security
A DAM can store licence information and flag expiring rights. However, the responsibility for maintaining accurate data remains with you. Without documentation, there is no legal certainty.
7. Your file management is perfect
If your teams already have clear rules in place and can find files reliably, you may not need a DAM (yet). In that case, stay on top of things – and use a DAM later on to scale up your established processes.
8. You know nothing about DAM
Anyone investing without prior knowledge risks setting themselves up for disappointment. Do your research, try out demos and speak to independent experts such as DAM United before investing.
9. You think DAM is only for large companies
DAM systems used to be expensive and complex. Today, there are flexible solutions available for businesses of all sizes. Assess which features you really need – and take a pragmatic approach to getting started.
10. You hate change
A DAM is not a ‘plug-and-play’ tool. It changes the way people work and requires an open mind. Those who get their teams on board will be rewarded with more efficient workflows, faster campaigns and less chaos.
Conclusion: Honesty saves money
A DAM system is not a panacea. It is a tool that is only as effective as the processes it supports. Companies that accept this reality use DAM more successfully – and save themselves frustration and costs.
