Migration of the DAM system at the University of Basel: From Cumulus to fylr
The University of Basel may be the oldest university in Switzerland, but its facilities and appearance are among the most modern. It is regularly ranked among the top 100 universities in the world in international rankings. In order to communicate its services and offerings in an appealing way, the university relied on the DAM system Canto Cumulus. With the official end of support for Cumulus on December 31, 2023, a migration of around 26,000 digital assets became necessary.
The university commissioned the experienced DAM specialists at DAM United, who have specialized in Cumulus migrations for years, to select a new DAM solution, carry out the migration, provide data protection-compliant hosting and provide further support.
Transition to fylr - semi-automated migration with a proven solution
After a thorough analysis of the existing system environment and requirements, the consultants recommended switching to fylr (formerly easydb) from Programmfabrik. fylr is considered a modern, efficient and cost-effective DAM solution and has established itself as a reliable DAM in numerous projects.
In the first step, the DAM experts worked with the University of Basel to develop a consolidated, future-proof structure for managing digital assets. Existing metadata, folder structures, user groups and access rights were analyzed, optimized and adapted to the extended functions of fylr.
The actual migration of the assets was then carried out by the University of Basel itself – supported by the DAMmigrate tool developed by DAM United. With the help of the specially configured converter, the data was transferred semi-automatically and efficiently. Precise mapping of the information fields ensured a secure, fast and resource-saving migration.
The system changeover to fylr carried out by DAM United has proven itself at numerous companies. It is a simple, secure and cost-effective solution for those who want to switch and benefit from the latest DAM developments and work more effectively with large image collections.
